Thanks largely to James Cameron’s Avatar film, the technophiles are going crazy for 3D TV and 3D gaming. The large TV manufacturers are aggressively marketing their 3D television offerings with 5 companies so far having 3D TV’s available to buy.
But is there really a need for you to switch from good old 2D TV to 3D TV? It’s served us well for the last 70 years, so why the need to change?
Well this article is here to convince you why you should think about changing your vision to 3D.
3D Movies
You won’t get quite the same movie experience as when you saw Avatar at the IMAX cinema but remember when you saw your first Blu-ray movie in true HD and couldn’t believe how good it looked compared to normal DVD?
If you’ve never seen a Blu-ray movie before then you need to check it out!. Well 3D movies on your 3D TV is like that, it raises the bar significantly so that when you watch a film at a friend’s house you will feel like there is something missing.
Documentaries
OK, so this might not be a defining reason to buy a 3D TV, but it could work as an excuse to tell your significant other! Nature documentaries literally come alive in 3D, your kids (or the big kid in yourself) will be glued to the screen, learning about the world around them in a way never before possible.
Imagine your favorite sports will literally jump out of the screen! You will feel like you are literally in the crowd and as more and more broadcasters add 3D sports channels to their line up, you’re going to be able to take your pick of which sports to watch.
Kyle from Gizmodo wrote “watching the World Cup in 3D made the game (more) beautiful.” Whether we like it or not, in not-too-distant future we can all experience a little 3D magic at the comfort of our home.
Converts 2D to 3D
You can still view 2D content just like a regular TV, but select the 3D option and all your old 2D content will spring out at you in 3D glory. Now I’m not going to lie to you and say converted 2D content looks as good as purpose made 3D video, but it does look pretty awesome! There’s a certain lack of ‘depth’ to the images sometimes, but you quickly get used to it.
At the recent Consumer Electronics Show, Toshiba unveiled a “smart” ZX900 Series Cell TV that have the capability to take any 2-D content, including sports broadcasts, movies and video games, and convert it into 3-D in real time.
3D TV’s are Energy Efficient
The latest 3D TV’s are amongst the most efficient TV’s ever built. Some are 50% more efficient than the Energy Star guidelines. While the initial outlay might be higher, owning a 3D TV actually works out cheaper compared to an older LCD / Plasma / CRT television because the power consumption is less. It follows that if you are using less energy, you reduce your carbon footprint albeit by a very small amount.
Save on fuel!
Haha, I put my hands up and tell you that this just appeals to me because I like to show off and I put it in as a bonus reason and who knows, it might be the deciding factor if you have to convince your partner!
When you get your 3D TV and your buddies find out, believe me, you’ll never have to go to someone else’s house ever again as they’ll all come over to yours to watch the big game, the big fight (boxing in 3D…WOW!), the latest movies and to play 3D games. If you are not a sociable person, probably best to keep the fact that you’ve got a 3D TV a secret because you’ll find a lot of people suddenly want to come and watch TV with you!
At the end of the day, owning a 3D TV at the moment is a luxury not everyone can afford. But if you love your movies and sports and want to be the talk of the neighborhood, you owe it to yourself to get down to the local electrical store, test out the 3D ready TV’s there, and then go on the Internet to buy it for cheaper!
